Does Coinbase report to the IRS?

Yes. Coinbase reports US customers' crypto sales and exchanges to the IRS on Form 1099-DA, starting with transactions on or after January 1, 2025 (IRS broker reporting FAQ; Coinbase Form 1099-DA page, archived 2026-10-25). The recipient instructions printed on the form say brokers "must report proceeds from (and in some cases, basis for) digital asset dispositions" both to the customer and to the IRS (IRS Form 1099-DA). Coinbase's tax-year 2025 form carries gross proceeds only; from tax year 2026 the form also carries cost basis for covered assets. Staking rewards and similar income are not on Form 1099-DA: Coinbase reports them on Form 1099-MISC once a customer's total reaches that form's threshold, and futures on Form 1099-B (Coinbase tax information, archived 2026-10-13).

Which forms Coinbase issues

Coinbase's tax information page lists the IRS forms below for US customers. The eligibility wording is Coinbase's own; the middle column summarizes the IRS instructions for each form.

2024 and earlierNo Form 1099-DA. Broker reporting on this form begins with transactions on or after January 1, 2025 (IRS digital assets page). Not covered here.
2025 (forms issued in early 2026)Gross proceeds only. Brokers were "not required to report basis information with respect to sales effected in 2025" (IRS 1099-DA instructions, 2025). Coinbase said its 2025 form would "only include proceeds" and would be provided "no later than March 17, 2026" (Coinbase Form 1099-DA page, archived 2026-10-25).$600 or more in box 3 (IRS 1099-MISC instructions, Rev. 2026 (forms issued in early 2027)Gross proceeds for all digital assets, plus cost basis for covered assets; basis for noncovered assets is voluntary (IRS 1099-DA instructions, 2026). Coinbase: "Beginning tax year 2026, Form 1099-DA will also include cost basis information."$2,000 or more for tax years beginning after 2025, which "may be adjusted for inflation beginning in calendar year 2027" (IRS 1099-MISC instructions, 12/2026).

When the 2026 forms are due to customers

Publication 1099 sets February 15 of the following year as the date for furnishing Forms 1099-DA and 1099-B to recipients, and January 31 for most Forms 1099-MISC. A date that falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday moves to the next business day (IRS Publication 1099, 2026). February 15, 2027 is Washington's Birthday, a federal holiday (OPM holiday schedule), so under that rule the 2026 Forms 1099-DA and 1099-B are due Tuesday, February 16, 2027. January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so the general Form 1099-MISC date becomes Monday, February 1, 2027. The February 15 date also applies to statements furnished as part of a broker's consolidated reporting statement, so a Form 1099-MISC furnished that way is due Tuesday, February 16, 2027 (Publication 1099; Internal Revenue Code section 6045(b)). The Coinbase pages cited here do not say whether Coinbase furnishes its forms that way. A broker can ask the IRS for more time to furnish statements on Form 15397; an approved request generally allows up to 30 extra days (Publication 1099). Coinbase's 1099-DA page, as captured on 2026-10-25, gave a date only for the tax-year 2025 form.

What counts as a sale on Form 1099-DA

The IRS instructions define a sale to include disposing of digital assets for cash, for different digital assets, for stored-value cards, or for services provided by the broker (IRS 1099-DA instructions, 2026). Coinbase's help page gives crypto-to-crypto exchanges and crypto-to-cash conversions as examples. When crypto is sent to another wallet or address, Coinbase says only the crypto used to pay the network fee is reported on Form 1099-DA; the rest of the transfer is not (Coinbase Form 1099-DA page, archived 2026-10-25).

Coinbase also points out that gross proceeds are the total amount received from all disposals, including small trades. Gross proceeds are not a net gain and not an account balance.

What is not on Form 1099-DA, or need not be

Is there a minimum amount?

For ordinary crypto sales, no. The IRS instructions say brokers generally report all amounts from sales of digital assets they effect, unless a de minimis rule applies (IRS 1099-DA instructions, 2026). The de minimis rules cover three cases:

Form 1099-MISC thresholds are in the table above. A threshold decides only whether a form is issued. The IRS digital assets page states that income from digital assets is taxable, and that digital asset transactions are reported on a return whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss (IRS digital assets page).

What the IRS receives

The digital asset question on Form 1040

Form 1040 asks whether, at any time during the year, the taxpayer received a digital asset as a reward, award or payment for property or services, or disposed of one by sale, exchange or otherwise. The IRS page lists situations where the answer is "No": only holding digital assets, purchasing them with US dollars or other real currency without disposing of any, and moving them between the taxpayer's own wallets or accounts, unless a transaction fee was paid in digital assets (IRS digital assets page). The recipient instructions printed on Form 1099-DA say that receiving the form generally means a digital asset was sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of, and they point to the "Yes" box (IRS Form 1099-DA).
